Best Landcruiser 300 Series Suspension Upgrade: Outback Adventure

With the latest `Cruiser well and truly established on the Australian market now, there are a lot of folks looking for the best suspension upgrade for the 300 Series LandCruiser. While this may be a subjective thing for some, for most people choosing the absolute best kit for the 300 Series LandCruiser is actually pretty easy.

Take a look at Superior Engineering’s Outback Adventurer GVM Upgrade kit for the 300LC and you’ll see it ticks all the boxes for those looking to build a capable, comfortable and big-rubber-ready touring weapon. Way more than a simple spring and shock upgrade, the Outback Adventurer kit covers every base needed to make it completely road legal with a 4in increase in overall ride height and capable of running either a 33in or 35in tyre, with a GVM increase up to 4200kg.

FRONT END

Superior Engineering 2.5 Remote Res ECDS monotube Coilovers control the bounce and create the basis for the pointy end’s suspension. They’re paired with Aussie-made heavy-duty coils and are fully rebuildable, serviceable and upgradeable and come with a 3-year, unlimited km warranty. Each shock can be fine-tuned to suit your load and desired ride-quality perfectly with a huge range of spare parts. There’s up to 100 stages of compression adjustment thanks to the in-cab controller, and even the mounting is a snap thanks to the 300 Series-specific remote reservoir mounts, which keep your reservoirs secure and out of harm’s way.

It goes without saying that any IFS suspension system takes more than just coils and shocks to get working properly though. That’s why the Outback Adventurer kits come with 4130 Chromoly tube upper control arms (UCAs), which maintain alignment and suspension geometry throughout the arc of wheel travel.

The UCAs also provide additional clearance for the front coil springs and utilise poly bushes at the frame end and high angle ball joints at the wheel end to allow for maximum movement without binding.

The front end is rounded out with a Superior Engineering 25mm diff drop, which alleviates the stresses on the CV shafts involved with running a lift on an IFS suspension system. The diff drop maintains optimum angles of operation and greatly extends CV life.

REAR END

Just like out the front, the foundation of the rear suspension in the Outback Adventurer kit is the heavy-duty Australian-made coil springs and the Superior Engineering 2.5 Remote-res ECDS shock absorbers, with the compression adjustment controlled from inside the cab. The springs and shocks are backed up by rear sway bar extensions and extended brake lines that have been selected to match the rear shock travel perfectly.

Superior Engineering have also identified that the lower spring seats on the diff housing were not up to task when loaded up with big trailers or heavier loads, so they have included a weld-on brace kit for the lower seats, which strengthens them up to handle the new 4200kg GVM without a worry.

UNDERBODY PROTECTION

While having a suspension lift nets a huge increase in your 300 Series’ capability, there’s nothing that can completely prevent you from occasionally getting stuck or hung up when off-road. That’s why Superior Engineering off a full stainless steel underbody guard kit that also includes a front tow point.

While occasionally getting caught out is simply a part of off-road driving, having this onboard will prevent a heap of potential damage and gives you a convenient place to hook up a recovery strap or winch hook.

THE FINISHING TOUCHES

We’ve got the front and rear suspension in, the protection panels in place and some proper tyres bolted up, but we’re still not quite finished. As with most mods, it’s the last 10% of the job that can take 90% of the time.

Not with this kit, however.

The Outback Adventurer kit has everything you need included, so you’re not mucking around trying to work out what your actual speed is on larger rubber, or attempting to explain to the officer why your tyres are poking out past the bodywork.

A speedo correction module lets you know exactly how fast you’re going while the Cat-6 LED indicator lamps and slimline LED reverse light keep your 300 completely legal with the new 4200kg GVM Australia-wide. As for the wheels and tyres, they’re kept on the right side of the law with the Superior Engineering 35mm flares for the 300 Series, and the Superior Engineering mudflaps make sure there’s not too much vertical aspect of the tyres showing either.

Last, but not least, the inclusion of the Superior Outback Adventurer chrome guard decal lets everyone know what you’re driving and gets you one hundred extra cool points, which can come in handy if you know any teenagers.
